Worst Intersections of Tarrant and McLennan Counties

Table of Contents

Some intersections stand out not just for complexity but for their accident frequency. In Tarrant and McLennan counties, several locations consistently report high crash rates. Understanding these danger zones helps you stay alert on the road—and highlights where infrastructure improvements matter most.

Tarrant County Hotspots

Tarrant County consistently ranks among the state’s busiest regions for traffic. Thousands of collisions occur here each year, many concentrated along major highways and intersections in Fort Worth and surrounding cities.

One of the most problematic areas includes the interchange of I-35W and I-30 in Fort Worth, a high-volume junction where merging traffic and daily congestion often lead to crashes. The Loop 820 corridor also remains a trouble spot, especially around Rufe Snow Drive and East Lancaster Avenue at Riverside Drive, where short merge lanes and sudden slowdowns increase collision risks. Another area of concern is Interstate 20, which continues to rank among the nation’s most dangerous highways, with severe accidents tied to high speeds and dense traffic.

High speeds, frequent lane changes, and congestion contribute to a higher rate of severe accidents here compared to other highways.

McLennan County Trouble Spots

McLennan County has also identified a series of dangerous intersections where crashes are disproportionately high. Among the most dangerous are:

  • Valley Mills Drive and Lake Air Drive – confirmed as a high-accident area, common collisions include side-impacts and rear-end crashes.
  • Highway 6 and Bosque Boulevard – a location with a notable number of intersection-related crashes in Waco, suggesting elevated risk.
  • Hewitt Drive and Panther Way – widely identified as high-priority for safety improvements due to pedestrian risks and infrastructure gaps, even though detailed crash numbers are not publicly available.

Other intersections, such as Franklin Avenue and New Road, Waco Drive and 18th Street, and China Spring Highway at Flat Rock Road, also made the county’s list of dangerous areas, underscoring how both high-traffic urban corridors and suburban roadways face significant safety challenges.

McLennan County’s “Six to Fix” Safety Initiative

In Waco, McLennan County is actively addressing safety through the “Six to Fix” project. Funded by a $1.2 million federal grant, the initiative targets six intersections with frequent injuries. Improvements include pedestrian islands, scramble crosswalks, bulb-outs, and enhanced signage. Key sites include Valley Mills Drive & Dutton Avenue, Hewitt Drive near Midway schools, Loop 340 at US 77, Loop 340 in Bellmead, La Salle Avenue corridor, and a downtown Waco crossing. Community feedback will guide final implementation decisions.

Staying Safe on Texas Roads

While infrastructure improvements can help reduce accidents, driver behavior remains the most critical factor in staying safe. Maintaining safe speeds, avoiding distractions, and exercising patience at busy intersections can go a long way toward preventing crashes.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a collision at one of these intersections, you should not have to face the aftermath alone. Our team at Law Office of Dan Moore is here to fight for your rights and help you pursue the compensation you deserve. Contact us today for a free consultation.
